What is a HEX color code?

A HEX color code is a six-digit value that describes red, green and blue in base 16, prefixed with #. Each pair of digits ranges from 00 to FF, which gives 16.7 million possible colors.

HEX is the format designers paste into CSS, design tools and brand guides because it is short, precise and universally supported.

HEX vs RGB vs HSL

RGB expresses the same three channels in decimal, while HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness so you can reason about a color instead of memorizing numbers.

Use HEX for handoff and CSS, RGB when you need an alpha channel, and HSL or OKLCH when you are building scales and adjusting lightness.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between #FFF and #FFFFFF?
They are the same color. Three-digit HEX is shorthand: each digit is doubled, so #FFF expands to #FFFFFF.
Can I pick a color from an image?
Yes. Upload a photo, then hover or tap the preview to read the color under the pointer. You can copy HEX, RGB and HSL instantly.
Are the picked colors exact?
They are sampled from the displayed image pixels. Very large photos are scaled for speed, so sampling the original file gives the most precise result.
Is this color picker free?
Yes, all tools on this site are free to use without an account.
