Origins
Japanese traditional colors grew from the layered garment palettes (kasane-no-irome) of the Heian period and plant dyeing. Their names evoke seasons, flowers and the sky, and the tones are soft, muted and slightly greyed.
The system
Here they are grouped by the four seasons, with native names, romaji and gojuon readings alongside exact HEX, OKLCH and WCAG contrast values.
In practice
A lasting reference for kimono, washi, packaging and branding, and a natural fit for calm, restrained interface palettes.
