About Traditional color palettes

Season, element and harmony rules across Asian color traditions

How to use

Match a value to the traditional Japanese Wairo palette and explore its seasonal color names.

Traditional color palettes

Rules from Asian color traditions

Japanese palettes follow the four seasons, Chinese palettes follow the five elements, Korean palettes separate jeongsaek and jiansaek, and Vietnamese palettes use the five traditional hues. Thai, Tibetan, Indian, Mongolian and Indonesian collections add weekday, five-element, festival and craft groups.

The rule filters the collection to colors that belong together, then the generator balances the set so it works as a palette rather than five variations of one tone.

How the palette is chosen

The tool starts from a filtered candidate list and adds colors with the largest perceptual distance, measured in OKLCH. That keeps the result usable for backgrounds, accents and text.

Frequently asked questions

Are the color names translated?
No. Native names are kept as cultural references, with Latin readings shown where the collection provides them.
Can I export the palette?
Yes. Copy the CSS variables block and paste it into your stylesheet, or copy individual HEX values from each swatch.
What does Random do?
Random ignores the rule and draws a balanced set from the selected culture, which is useful for exploring the collection.
